    You’re well on your way to getting your small business online. Good for you! You’ve identified that target market of yours and you’ve defined your biggest need(s). What more is there to do?

    Well, now the fun part begins.

    It’s time to jump into digital marketing’s version of speed dating: Identifying Your Partner.

    What partner are we talking about, and why are they critical to the overall success of your digital marketing plan? That’s like asking why the city you choose to live in matters, or whether or not it will change your life if you decide to have kids.

    Selecting the right online partner is important, is what we’re saying.

    Digital Marketing Agencies Specialize, Too

    A lot of SMBs don’t realize that digital marketing firms aren’t one-size-fits-all. Some agencies are set up to handle huge, corporate clients and some are better organized to provide personal attention to smaller clients. Your needs will be totally different as a brick-and-mortar SMB than as a multinational online shopping brand…shouldn’t you choose a business-specific digital partner?

    When looking for a digital agency to partner with (and when we say “partner,” we mean an agency that will help you set online goals, do the web design and development, and help you with marketing strategy and implementation), remember a couple of things:

    • You’re going to spend a lot of time interfacing with your agency. Be sure you trust the people and enjoy interacting with them.
    • Your agency should have experience getting businesses of your size and type online. If you’re a manufacturer, ask them for examples of their digital manufacturing work.
    • The firm you choose should meet you where you are. They should challenge you to think critically about your brand but you should also expect them to act as the experts.

    How Do You Choose the Right Partner?

    You go on a lot of ‘dates.’ It’s a good idea to talk to several digital agencies before you commit to one to better understand who’s out there and what they’ve been working on. Feel free to ask for samples and references, and be sure to meet in person if possible to get a feel for the office and the personalities there.

    Pay attention to how well the agency represents itself. Is their website impressive? Do they regularly put out industry-relevant content? Do they have a distinctive brand? The more attention your digital partner pays to their own digital details, the more they’ll pay to yours.


    Does that sound like a lot of work?

    With digital marketing (just like love!) you’ll “know it when you see it,” and the results are worth it. Trust your gut about who understands your business and who will make a good partner through the ups and downs. Your digital strategy will be ever-changing, and good agencies know that. They’ve just got a plan to adapt.
